Item details Handmade Material hand painted cast stone I design, carve, and cast the pieces myself: theyre wholly original. I cast them in modified gypsum (a very strong building material). After the pieces cure, my wife glazes and seals them. The pieces come boxed, can stand or hang on a wall (there's a hook on the back, which is flat and unpainted), and can go outside. Each piece comes with a history card stating: From her earliest years, Rita of Cascia (1377-1457) wanted to be a nun, but her parents forced her to marry. After her abusive husband and her two sons were all killed, she became an Augustinian nun. Her reputation for sanctity and for helping the suffering grew. This statue employs three symbols associated with Rita. In one story, the superior of Ritas convent tells her to take a dead stick, plant it, and tend it every day. This Rita does for years until one day it begins to grow into a grapevine. To this day, the leaves from the grapevines are ground and are said to have healing properties, especially for women. A second story tells that when Rita was born, a swarm of bees appeared, flying in and out of her mouth, none hurting her. A third story holds that as Rita was dying in the middle of winter, she asked an attendant to get her a rose. The attendant went off into the garden, and there grew a single rose, which she brought back and gave to Rita. All these stories of Rita overcoming tribulation has made her, like St. Jude, a patron of those in difficult situations. Dimensions: 8.5 (h) x 3 (w) x 2 (d)
